Left to Their Own Fate (Odyssey), 2019
Performative action, time, text activation by the actor Fábio Godinho, ongoing from 8 to10 May 2019 in the pavilion and in Venice
From 8 to10 May 2019, during the three days preceding the official opening of the Venice Biennale to the public, the actor Fábio Godinho silently reads one of the three volumes of the integral text of Homer’s Odyssey in public.
Each time he finishes reading a page, he tears it out and, in a gesture of offering, hands it to a visitor or lets it fall to the ground. The pages continue their journey, each following its own destiny. Thanks to this dissemination, they form an invisible and infinite constellation of relation ships between the people who took home a page of the book.
The performance began on the morning of 8 May 2019 and ended on10 May, when Fábio had finished reading the last page. During this entire period, he at all times carried the three volumes with him, even outside the context of the Biennale.

*Du 8 au 10 mai 2019, au cours des trois jours précédant l’ouverture officielle de la Biennale de Venise au public, l’acteur Fábio Godinho lit chaque jour, en silence et devant les visiteurs, un des trois volumes qui constituent le texte intégral de L’Odyssée d’Homère.
À chaque fois qu’il termine de lire une page de L’Odyssée, il l’arrache et, dans un geste d’offrande, l’offre à un visiteur ou l’abandonne par terre. Les pages continuent ainsi leur voyage ailleurs en suivant chacune leur propre destin. Par cette dissémination, elles dessinent une constellation invisible et infinie de relations entre les personnes qui auront emmené avec elles une page du livre.
La performance a commencé le matin du 8 mai 2019 pour prendre fin le 10 mai, à l’heure où Fábio avait terminé de lire la dernière page de L’Odyssée. Pendant cette période, les trois tomes l’ont accompagné partout, même en dehors du contexte de la biennale.*
