In Memory of Human Amnesia, 2008–2009
Triptych, graphite on paper
Each 17.5 × 148 cm
Laid out in triptych form, the words “In Memory of Human Amnesia” are repeated like a mantra. Obscured on the left, in the middle or on the right, the full phrase is legible only when the three versions are displayed together. Each version was painstakingly drawn with graphite on paper, taking care with every stroke to align the gradual shadings. This epitaph is a reminder that we must forget, that forgetting has a positive function and is even the sine qua non condition of happiness. To forget is to free oneself from the past so as to be able to act. As Nietzsche put it, “Forgetting is essential to action of any kind.”
