Departure (Destiny of Rupture), 2012
Chair, plumb bob
Height variable, 42 cm dia
A mason’s plumb bob hung from the ceiling has plunged through the woven cane seat of a chair. It remains suspended above the floor, as if not quite having reached its destination, held back by a force that prevents it from fully detaching itself from its point of departure. These two objects, handed down from the artist’s family, are arranged in a way that evokes the idea of uprooting and rupture, the inevitable fate of people who, of necessity, leave their place of origin. An ever-foreign environment becomes their homeland.
